HVTC 40th Anniversary - Montana Dries
Former HVTC electrical apprentice, Montana Dries, has followed in the footsteps of her father and now supports their family business as a Senior Electrician.
Montana completed the final year of her electrical apprenticeship with HVTC and JA Martin Electrical in 2019. Her interest in pursuing an apprenticeship and working in the electrical trade stemmed from learning about her father’s career as an electrician.
To explore her interest in the trade, Montana undertook an electrical TVET course through school in year 11 and 12 and started working with her dad to do some basic electrical tasks. It became clear that this was the pathway she wanted to pursue.
Initially, Montana completed the first part of her apprenticeship while directly employed before leaving that position and applying for an out-of-work apprenticeship position with HVTC and JA Martin.
“It was a little bumpy as I had to change employers and things but having the extra support from HVTC was great. I was employed directly before switching to HVTC, but the difference was amazing.”
After completing her apprenticeship, Montana was named as the Woman in Non-Traditional Trade Apprentice/Trainee of the Year at the 2019 HVTC Excellence Awards.
Montana is now currently working with Dries Electrical, a family business run by her father. She contributes to all of the day-to-day electrical tasks, as well as doing some bookkeeping and organisation.
“I do a bit of everything, but it’s always all hands on deck here. I am really enjoying it, though, and being able to work in a small community and have that customer interaction as well has been really great.
Montana said that she hasn’t had time for any further study as she has recently had a baby and is now back at work, which she says is flat out. Montana believes her apprenticeship was a great opportunity that allowed her to learn about various aspects of the trade and get a start in her career.
