HVTC 40th Anniversary - Luke Penny

Luke Penny is a former HVTC Civil Construction trainee who completed his training in 2016 while hosted to Sutherland Shire Council.

After leaving school, Luke wanted to gain some real work experience and earn a qualification to get started with his career. This led him down the traineeship pathway, which allowed him to land an ongoing position in civil maintenance with local government.

Luke says his traineeship gave him the opportunity to learn from his TAFE teachers and fellow students, as well as on-the-job with his supervisors and other crew members.

“Creating friendships with other TAFE students and coming away with knowledge from the classroom was a highlight for me,” he said.

Since completing his Cert III in Civil Construction, Luke has gone on to complete a Cert IV in Civil Construction Supervision to further develop his knowledge and skills in the field.

Luke was offered a position with Sutherland Shire Council after his traineeship, where he is now still working as the Permanent Team Leader in Civil Maintenance and is currently in the acting role of Maintenance Superintendent.
