HVTC 40th Anniversary - Flynn Balcombe
Flynn Balcombe is a former HVTC electrical apprentice who completed his training in 2017 while hosted to Donaldson Coal and undertook his RTO studies through Hunter-V-Tec.
The 33-year-old Whitebridge local originally decided to pursue an apprenticeship back in 2014 as he had an interest in the electrical field and believed that a practical learning pathway would be the best way for him to get into his career.
“It is a great way to gain technical experience while completing theoretical learning,” he said.
Flynn said that he really benefited from his apprenticeship as it gave him a hands-on pathway to becoming a qualified electrician while gaining the knowledge and skills necessary to succeed in his trade.
Something that stood out to Flynn as a highlight of his apprenticeship was taking out a win at the 2017 NSW Regional Training Awards for the Hunter region, being named as a winner in the Apprentice of the Year category.
Since completing his apprenticeship in 2017, Flynn has secured a position with Webelec Mining, where he is currently working as an underground coal mining electrician.
Flynn said that he would recommend the apprenticeship pathway to others as it provides a way for people to gain real industry experience and earn a wage while studying to gain a qualification.
