HVTC 40th Anniversary - Brooke Aldous

Brooke Aldous has come a long way since her traineeship with HVTC and Shoalhaven City Council – Shoalhaven Water.

After initially completing a Cert III in Business Admin, Brooke rolled over into a Cert IV traineeship, which she finished in 2012. Since then, she has continued to develop her career with Council, working in a number of roles across the organisation, including Governance Officer between 2014-2018 to Senior Admin Officer from 2018 – 2020.

Then last year, at 30 years of age, Brooke secured a role as a Personal Assistant to a Director at SCC – making her the youngest PA at Council. It’s a role she believes she was made for.

“I’ve always been driven by customer service – it’s something I’m really good at it,” she said.

“My personality suits a support role. I’m not really interested in being a manager – I get a lot of satisfaction out of helping others.”

Brooke attributes her career success to her traineeship and believes she wouldn’t be where she is today with Council if she didn’t go down that pathway.

“After school, a lot of the roles I was applying for wanted experience, but I didn’t have any qualifications,” she said.

“I’ve always been quite academic, but I didn’t want to go to uni. I thought that by time I went to Uni and finished a degree (and after paying for it), I could have gained that experience already by working.

“I thought a traineeship would be a good way to get experience and a foot in the door while getting paid at the same time. Turns out it was the best thing I ever did. I can’t speak highly enough of that pathway.”
