HVTC 40th Anniversary - Benjamin Longworth
In 2011, Benjamin Longworth commenced a School-Based apprenticeship with HVTC in the electrical trade. After completing his first year while at school, Ben then transitioned into an apprenticeship and completed his training in 2015 after gaining practical experience with Get Switched On and Whitehaven’s Maules Creek Coal.
“When I was at school, I wasn’t sure whether I wanted to go to Uni or do a trade, but the School-Based apprenticeship seemed like a good option as it gave you the best of both worlds.
I was interested in how things worked and how electricity worked, as well as the processes involved and maintaining equipment and machinery, so the electrical trade appealed to me.”
“Coming from school and already having 18 months of the trade under my belt made it easier for me to transition into the full-time apprenticeship. The School-Based path allows you to learn the basics and gain initiative so that you can have the base knowledge when going into an apprenticeship, and having real experience in the industry was great to help the transition straight from school into working full-time.”
Since completing his apprenticeship 6 years ago, Ben has been working with Whitehaven at Maules Creek Coal, where he is now an Electrical Supervisor. His role involves overseeing maintenance and electrical projects, breakdowns, and supervising the current cohort of HVTC apprentices on site.
Ben is also currently studying to complete a Cert III and IV in Instrumentation and Control to assist him to further his knowledge and skills in his career.
