Host profile - John Holland CPB Ghella
John Holland CPB Ghella joint venture (JHCPBG) is the tunnelling contractor for the Tunnel and Station Excavation Works (TSE) for Sydney Metro City & Southwest.
Both John Holland and CPB Contractors worked together on Sydney Metro Northwest, successfully completing the 15-kilometre twin tunnels and station civil works seven months early. Remaining project works are expected to be completed in early 2021.
The infrastructure industry is currently experiencing a significant boom within Sydney. As a result, JHCPBG JV is working to provide skills, knowledge and experience to up-skill existing industry workers along with capitalising on transferable skills from other industries.
Currently, 105 of JHCPBG's JVs direct staff and workforce are engaged as apprentices and trainees undertaking qualifications in Leadership & Management, Business Services, Civil Construction, Civil Supervision and Building and Construction.
On average, employees spend 976 hours per month on formal face to face direct learning related to completion of the above apprenticeship / traineeship. In addition to the formal requirements of their apprenticeship / traineeship, workers are involved in onsite personal development activities relating to their specific needs.
One example has been the introduction of simulated tunnelling specific training, allowing operators to fine tune their skills and be deemed competent away from pressures and constraints of a live site. Some of these training tools include the Segment Erector software and Augmented Reality modules for Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), Mined Tunnel and precast environments.
JHCPBG JV’s school-based trainee program is also a first of its kind for the industry, creating pathways to future employment for 17 Sydney students interested in careers in the construction and business industries.
In partnership with Global Skills, Sydney Metro, TAFE NSW and HVTC as lead Group Training Organisation (GTO) for the Sydney Metro Project, JHCPBG JV also developed a Pre-employment Training Program to give job seekers the opportunity to gain the skills and training to kickstart their civil construction career. Selected participants undertake an intense four-week program at the TAFE NSW Infrastructure Skills Centre at Annandale, where they complete formalised training, gain hands on training and site familiarisation. Successful completion of this pre-employment program enables the participants to apply for a Certificate III in Civil Construction Apprenticeship with JHCPBG JV.
As a result of initiatives like these, JHCPBG JV was recently named Large Employer of the Year at the NSW Training Awards, recognising their innovation in training methods and delivery and strong commitment to the development and training of the project team in line with the project’s vision of ‘Staying ahead of the Game’.
