Georgia’s career is blooming

Starting her career in the traditionally male dominated horticulture industry hasn’t been an issue for Goulburn’s Georgia Brown, who’s meeting this year’s International Women’s Day pledge to accelerate gender parity.

Currently in the second year of her Certificate III Parks and Garden apprenticeship, nineteen year old Georgia was placed with her host employer, Goulburn Mulwaree Council through HVTC, a state-wide group training organisation.

“I wasn’t put off by the thought of working in a male dominated industry. I believe everyone should be able to choose their own work pathway and whilst these types of jobs can be challenging they are also very rewarding.”

“I’m very appreciative of the opportunity I’ve been given to pursue my interests and gain a valuable trade qualification in an industry I enjoy,” said Georgia.

“I’ve had fantastic support from my colleagues at Goulburn Mulwaree Council. They’ve made me feel very much part of the team since I started and I’ve really appreciated that.”

“My HVTC Field Officer, Valerie Roberts, has also been very helpful. She’s had some great advice and she’s just a phone call away if I need any advice on my apprenticeship.”

“Georgia is dedicated to her job, keen to learn and continually strives to improve. She enjoys her job and it clearly shows, she is always happy with a big smile on her face. Georgia has a very pleasant demeanour and a great attitude to work and life,” said Valerie.

Growing up on a farm kick-started Georgia’s interest in gardening and landscaping and at school her interests lay in agriculture and environment subjects.

“I’m really enjoying my apprenticeship. I’ve always liked working outdoors and I particularly like the practical side of my job. Planting out trees and flowerbeds and creating great displays which all the community can enjoy is very rewarding,” said Georgia.

When she isn’t helping the team create and maintain Goulburn’s picturesque parks and gardens, Georgia enjoys fresh water fishing and camping.
