Southern Tablelands trainee wins group training award
Tallong local Ben Baker took home the title of Disability Trainee of the Year at the 2018 HVTC Excellence Awards held in Newcastle on Friday 4 May.
Ben started his traineeship with group training organisation HVTC Southern Tablelands in mid-2017, and is completing a Certificate III in Agriculture with host employers Greg and Karen Waters Farm Contractors.
Ben originally started work with Greg and Karen as a way to gain some experience in the industry but they soon signed him up for a part-time traineeship. Three months in, Ben’s commitment to his work was so impressive that he was promoted to full-time trainee.
A student at TAFE NSW Goulburn campus, Ben is enjoying his studies and hopes to continue a career in Agriculture at the end of the traineeship.
“I’ve learnt a lot so far including spraying, weed control, fencing, marking sheep, stock work and helping in the shearing sheds. I really enjoy the outdoor work; we work hard sometimes but it’s very rewarding,” said Ben.
Host employer Greg Waters said Ben has shown considerable improvement over the past 12 months of employment, and is enthusiastic, reliable and hard working.
“Ben has been able to transfer his skills learnt at TAFE into the workplace and is always keen to learn more through asking questions. He’s a dedicated young man and a great member of our team,” said Greg.
20 year old Ben is also a volunteer member of Tallong Rural Fire Brigade and enjoys helping out his local community.
Winners in the 13 Excellence Award categories were selected from finalists across HVTC’s ten regional branches located throughout New South Wales.
HVTC CEO Sharon Smith says vocational education pathways can lead to career success for many young people.
“These awards not only celebrate the great results of our apprentices and trainees but they also reflect the significant role our business and industry partners play in making sure our young people secure quality employment outcomes,” Ms Smith said.
