Former Mid Coast school teacher named Trainee of the Year

Port Macquarie-Hastings Council Park Attendant Brad Hancock was named Trainee of the Year at the 2018 HVTC Excellence Awards held in Newcastle on Friday 4 May.

Twelve months ago, the former primary school teacher decided to pursue his passion plants and apply for a Certificate II in Horticulture traineeship with group training organisation HVTC Mid Coast.

Brad has impressed all concerned with his commitment to work and learning as much as he can about the industry, plus his genuine dedication to maximising the traineeship opportunity.

Now in the second year of his traineeship, 34 year old Brad is completing a Cert III while working with host employer Port Macquarie-Hastings Council in their Recreation and Buildings Section.

Brad says he’s proud to be working with Council and supporting his local community.

“Having grown up in the local area and now with a young family of my own, I’m able to assist Council in achieving their vision on a daily basis and reap the rewards of their success by enjoying their public spaces, beaches, parks, library, and Glasshouse events,” he said.

Despite starting his early career on a very different path, Brad said he couldn’t be happier with his decision to take up a mature aged traineeship with HVTC Mid Coast.

“My advice to anyone who is considering entering into a traineeship or apprenticeship is to do it. It’s the best career decision I’ve ever made. I’m now in an industry that I genuinely love and can see a long, successful career in.”

Winners in the 13 Excellence Award categories were selected from finalists across HVTC’s ten regional branches located throughout New South Wales.

HVTC CEO Sharon Smith says vocational education pathways can lead to career success for many young people.

“These awards not only celebrate the great results of our apprentices and trainees but they also reflect the significant role our business and industry partners play in making sure people secure quality employment outcomes,” Ms Smith said.

The HVTC Trainee of the Year Award was sponsored by Centennial Coal.
