How does group training work?

Job Security

If work with your “Host” runs out we will rotate you to another employer to continue your vocation.

Quality Training and Work Rotation

Trainees can be sure the training programs they undertake are matched to industry requirements. Training can be tailored to suit individual employers' requirements.

Trainees may be rotated through different host businesses during their period of contract providing the exposure required to achieve each of the competencies of their vocation.

Monitoring and Support

Our field staff carries out regular workplace monitoring visits, including counselling and personal support. Field officers make sure trainees are receiving adequate training and are engaging in safe work practices.

Here's How It Works

Training
  • Trainees are selected and contracted to the Group Training Company
  • After placement with a host business, trainees undertake formal training, which may be on the job but they may also be required to attend an institution where required for delivery of their formal training. This will depend on the traineeship vocation being undertaken and the delivery model.
  • Trainees spend the remainder of their time working with the host business, where they receive on-the-job training matched to their accredited qualification
  • Our field officers visit each workplace on a regular basis, on average once every 12 weeks, to monitor progress, safe work practices and the on-the-job training being provided and to discuss any other issues identified
  • We provide a full support mechanism for all our trainees which can include mentoring on their training. We also assist with arrangements for off-the-job courses and check on progress with training providers

Employment

  • Trainees are employed by HVTC through a formal process of job advertisements, interviews and assessment for a traineeship.
  • They are then placed with host businesses for an agreed period. HVTC has a large number of employers – ranging from small to medium-sized to large businesses - who want to hire trainees and are willing to help train them.
  • We handle all the paperwork and records for the trainees and manage the payroll function as well as all other statutory employment obligations.

Traineeship FAQ’s

What is a Group Training Company?
A group training company is a business that employs trainees, and then places them with one or more host trainers (workshops) to undertake their vocation.

How much will you charge me for doing all of these things on my behalf?
Nothing.

If I attend RTO/TAFE one day a week, will I then be paid for four days only?
No! You will be paid for attending RTO/TAFE provided you present your attendance card signed by your RTO/TAFE teacher to your host employer immediately after having attended RTO/TAFE.

Does HVTC pay for all RTO/TAFE expenses?
Once each year of TAFE/RTO is successfully completed, and results have been received, we will reimburse a trainee their TAFE/RTO enrolment fee.

What should I do if I am not happy in the company where I have been placed for my training?
Your first line of action would be to discuss the situation with the workshop manager or, if this is not possible due to breakdown in communications, contact your Regional Office.

How long is a standard traineeship?
A Traineeship generally takes between 12 months to 2 years depending on the qualification being undertaken. It is possible with good results and hard work to achieve an early completion.

Do I have to go to TAFE or any other REGISTERED TRAINING ORGANISATION (RTO)?
Not necessarily! Many traineeships are conducted wholly on the job.

Where will I go to RTO/TAFE?
The course you are studying, and your home location, will determine which TAFE you attend. Other RTO's have their own specific Training locations.

Do I have to buy tools straight away?
Under a Federal Government initiative, some Certificate III level traineeships may receive an $800 tool voucher after the completion of the probationary period. It is advisable to check with our Regional Offices to check.
