At the recent Illawarra Regional Competition a local apprentice has shown yet again that Goulburn has a great resource of young talent.
Worldskills is held every two years and provides an opportunity for apprentices to represent their local community while gaining the opportunity to excel in their chosen trade.
Ben McWhirter is a second year fitting apprentice and was awarded a Bronze Medal in the fitting category in the competiton which was open to apprentices across the Illawarra Region covering an area from Goulburn to Wollongong, Queanbeyan and down to Bega.
The competitors were given a set of plans and had to machine a complex item to demanding tolerences. They were judged on accuracy, time taken to complete and the overall quality of the finished item.
Ben is employed by Southern Tablelands Group Training, the only Group Training company based in Goulburn, and is hosted by Ainsworth Engineering, a local engineering company.
Shane Croke of Ainsworth Engineering said "It is great to see a local lad excelling in his chosen trade. Ben will make a great Tradesperson at the end of his apprenticeship."
